Yolo County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Program

There are three levels of Reserve Deputies, each with different responsibilities:

Level III

• • Performs limited duties that typically do not require full law enforcement powers.
  • May work security assignments when supervised by a Level II or Level I Reserve, or a full-time Deputy Sheriff.

Level II

• • Performs patrol functions when supervised by a full-time Deputy Sheriff.
  • May work all security functions when partnered with a Level II Reserve, Level I Reserve, or full-time Deputy.

Level I

• • Performs all duties of Levels II and III.
  • May work independently on patrol after completing the Field Training Program.

To apply, candidates must:

• Be a U.S. citizen at or prior to appointment
• Be at least 21 years old
• Have a high school diploma or equivalen
• Have one of the following:
  • Employment as a Reserve Deputy in California within the last three years, or
  • Graduation from a POST-approved Reserve Academy within the last three years, or
  • Current enrollment in a Reserve Academy

• Possess a valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
• Be able to perform the essential job functions (listed below), with or without reasonable accommodation

Reserve Deputies must be able to:

• Read and understand English-language documents
• Write clear, accurate, and grammatically correct reports
• Communicate effectively in person, in writing, and over the radio
• Safely operate vehicles under various conditions, including emergencies
• Lift, carry, drag, pull, and push objects of varying sizes
• Stand, walk, or run for extended periods—including pursuing suspects over obstacles
• Observe, recognize, and recall people, vehicles, activities, and environmental conditions day or night
• Use only the force objectively necessary to control situations or suspects
• Safely and proficiently operate firearms and other weapons
• Exercise sound judgment in routine and high-stress situations
• Learn and apply policies, procedures, and factual information
• Maintain professionalism, composure, and ethical conduct
• Meet court standards regarding credibility (no history of dishonesty or disqualifying criminal behavior)
• Work courteously and effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
• Accept and apply constructive feedback
• Reliably meet scheduled assignments
• Perform other related duties as required
