General Coroner Information
The Coroner’s Section is located within the Administration Building of the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office. The Coroner is responsible for investigating all sudden, unexpected, violent, or otherwise unusual deaths that occur in Yolo County.
The primary duty of the Coroner is to determine the cause and manner of death. This is done through on-scene investigation, examination of evidence, review of medical records, interviews, toxicological testing, forensic pathology examinations, and autopsies when appropriate.
In addition to determining cause of death, the Coroner’s Section also:
- Confirms the positive identification of decedents
- Issues death certificates
- Notifies next-of-kin with care and professionalism
- Collects, processes, and preserves evidence
- Secures and releases personal property according to law
- Prepares comprehensive investigative reports
Coroner personnel utilize forensic photography, radiology, and laboratory sample collection as part of their investigative work. When required, staff may also provide testimony in court proceedings.
